At the same time, procurement models and healthcare policies vary widely across the region, shaping how pharmaceutical companies access demand.

These shifts narrow the windows of opportunity, favouring companies that respond quickly and are well-prepared.

"In some places, like Mexico, the procurement rules have been changing constantly," Yadav says. "To capture opportunities, you have to be extremely fast and extremely prepared."

For global pharmaceutical companies, this means expansion strategies cannot rely solely on regional market data or regulatory credentials. Success depends on understanding country-level regulatory nuances, procurement structures, and partner networks.

In other words, the real competitive advantage in global pharma expansion increasingly lies not in portfolio scale, but in market intelligence.

Global Approvals Don't Guarantee Global Access

In pharmaceutical strategy, approvals from major regulators such as the USFDA or the European Medicines Agency are often seen as global passports. In many markets, they can accelerate regulatory review or build credibility with local authorities.

But international expansion quickly reveals a more complicated reality.

"Even if a product is approved in the US or Europe, that doesn't always translate directly into Latin American markets," says Ashok Yadav, Head of Canada & LATAM at Strides Pharma.

Regulatory science itself can vary across regions. For example, stability studies conducted for temperate climates may not always meet requirements in countries with hotter, more humid conditions.

"Some countries require Zone 4 stability data, while the product may only have Zone 2 studies from the US or Europe," Yadav explains.

Operational requirements can also create unexpected barriers. Government procurement programs often specify precise packaging formats or pack sizes that must match national healthcare distribution systems.

For companies expanding internationally, this means that regulatory approval alone is not enough. Market access depends equally on whether products are technically and operationally aligned with each country's requirements.

The Partnership Economy of Global Pharma

If regulation defines how pharmaceutical markets operate, partnerships often determine who succeeds within them.

Across many international markets—particularly in Latin America—local distributors, regulatory partners, and procurement networks play a central role in identifying opportunities and navigating complex systems.

"In Latin America, relationships play a much bigger role in business than they do in more process-driven markets," Yadav says.

These partnerships often act as early warning systems for market shifts, particularly in countries where policy changes can rapidly reshape procurement frameworks. In such environments, local partner networks often provide the intelligence and agility that multinational companies need to compete.

Trust Is a Strategic Asset

Large supply agreements often depend on long-term partnerships between manufacturers, distributors, and healthcare institutions. Once trust is established, it can open doors across multiple markets and therapeutic areas.

But maintaining that trust requires discipline.

"Transparency with partners has been one of the most important factors in sustaining long-term business relationships," Yadav says.

In practice, this means companies must be realistic about what they can deliver—especially in an industry where supply chains remain vulnerable to disruption. "We prefer not to close a deal rather than close one and fail to supply."

This approach may seem conservative, but it reflects the realities of pharmaceutical supply chains. Reliability, particularly in institutional healthcare markets, often becomes the factor that determines whether partnerships last or not.

Data and AI: The Next Evolution of Business Development

As pharmaceutical markets become more fragmented, the role of business development is evolving as well. Traditionally, success in international business development relied heavily on relationship networks and regional expertise. Today, those capabilities are increasingly complemented by data-driven market analysis.

"Today, business development cannot rely only on relationships," Yadav says. "You need strong market understanding combined with data analytics."

Industry analysts increasingly view advanced analytics and AI as core capabilities for commercial strategy, enabling companies to analyze pricing dynamics, regulatory timelines, and competitive landscapes across global markets.

"If you combine market knowledge with data analytics and AI, you can understand opportunities much more clearly."

As regulatory frameworks evolve and procurement systems grow more complex, companies must combine local intelligence, trusted partnerships, and operational readiness to compete effectively. The companies that succeed internationally will not necessarily be the ones with the largest portfolios. They will be the ones who understand their markets the best.
